History of ECNU

Abbreviated as ECNU, they established East China Normal University in October 1951. The institution came into existence after the merger of Great China University and Kwang Hua University. Following its establishment, students from Fudan, Tongji, the University of Shanghai, the East China PE Academy, and 5 other universities joined the University.

The merger of these universities in the 1950s was part of the Chinese government’s initiative to build a single, stronger, and more Soviet-style institution that cultivates talent and promotes education in China.

ECNU was making fast progress. In March 1959, they authenticated the university as one of the first 16 national key universities in China. They reaffirmed this status in 1978. In 1972, a revolution on the Chinese mainland created the Shanghai Normal University, which incorporated ECNU into it. They reaffirmed the name East China Normal University in 1980.

The State Council allowed ECNU June 1986 to establish its graduate schools. In this analogy, ECNU passed the prerequisites to be sponsored by the major national program “Project 211.” In 2006, Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Education signed a partnership agreement to co-sponsor the university’s development.

This qualified ECNU as a member of “Project 985”. This also facilitated ECNU’s efforts and progress toward becoming a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationally-oriented world-class university. ECNU will become “an internationally recognized high-level University.

ECNU has great regard for internationalization as it aids in development and dominance. The university has established strategic cooperative partnerships with many world-renowned universities, such as the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University.

Currently, ECNU is a nationally renowned university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. It prides itself on having one of China’s most beautiful university campuses, hence the name “garden university.”

Yearly, ECNU sponsors and supervises the publication of over 20 academic journals and periodicals. Because of its environmental commitment, ECNU maintains a National Forest Ecosystem Observation and Research Station in Tiantong National Forest Park, Ningbo, Zhejiang. Compared to other universities in China, ECNU is rubbing shoulders with top-ranking universities such as Peking, Tsinghua, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Central South University.
