The History of Tsinghua University

They established Tsinghua in Beijing during a tumultuous period of national upheaval and conflicts with foreign powers, culminating in the Boxer Rebellion, an uprising against foreign influence in China. After the suppression of the revolt by a foreign alliance, including the United States, the ruling Qing dynasty was required to pay indemnities to alliance members.

Using this fund, they established the Tsinghua College in Beijing on 29 April 1911, on the site of a former royal garden to serve as a preparatory school for students the government planned to send to the United States.

They established the school under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang.” They renamed the school “Tsinghua School” in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925, after which the name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928.

The faculty valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, and the ancient and modern. Tsinghua scholars Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yunque, and Zhao Yuanren, renowned as the “Four Tutors” in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated this belief and had a profound impact on Tsinghua’s later development.

The university has affiliations with AEARU, APRU, and C9. Today, the university and its constituent colleges, graduate and professional schools, and other institutes offer 51 bachelor’s degree programs, 139 master’s degrees, and 107 Ph.D. programs.
